The Gravity-Powered Aircraft

The Fuelless Gravity Plane ConceptOur world is certainly not left wanting for free sources of energy. The sun vomits an absurd amount of energy upon the Earth’s surface constantly– up to a thousand watts per square meter during the daytime; the planet’s mantle writhes with heat energy, up to 4,000 degrees Celcius; and a tremendous supply of energy saturates the entire planet in the form of gravity. The difficulty has always been in finding ways to capture such energy usefully. Solar panels have had some success snatching up sunlight for conversion to electricity, geothermal installations use the earth’s heat to create power, and hydroelectric plants tap the potential energy of gravity. Currently a Nevada-based aviation company is exploring another creative way to utilize gravity as a power source– combining some very old ideas with some very new ones– to produce an aircraft concept which might one day tote people and cargo great distances without the need for fuel. The project is called the GravityPlane.

The idea sprung from the brain of Robert D. Hunt, a theoretical physicist and inventor who founded Hunt Aviation to develop his patented “gravity powered hybrid aircraft” concept which operates on the principles of buoyancy, aerodynamic lift, and gravity. It uses a cycle of climbing and descending to maintain its lift and forward speed, mimicking the behavior of the bodies of warm and cold air which make up the weather.

In order for the GravityPlane to become airborne, gas bags inside a pair of rigid, zeppelin-like structures are filled with helium from storage tanks inside the vehicle. This causes the aircraft to become lighter-than-air, and it rises from the ground. Compressed-air jets on the sides of the craft add further propulsion, pushing the vehicle skyward and decreasing the craft’s overall weight by releasing the stored air which acts as ballast. Once the craft reaches the altitude where the helium is no longer lighter than the surrounding air– theoretically as high as ten miles up– it is unable to climb any further. Some of the stored compressed air is then expanded into the dirigible areas, decreasing the buoyancy effect of the helium and starting the aircraft’s descent phase.

As gravity pulls the plane towards the earth, the long wings are moved to the swept-back position to reduce wind drag, and air turbines mounted on the top of the craft capture some of the forward momentum and use it to drive air pumps which can refill the on-board compressed air storage tanks. In this gliding mode, the aircraft achieves aerodynamic lift for a gradual descent at high speeds, and can travel in this configuration for about 400 to 600 miles. At the end of the gliding phase, the wings are redeployed. The compressed air can once again be forced out through the compressed air jets, pushing the vehicle upwards and increasing the vehicle’s buoyancy to lighter-than-air once again, beginning the cycle anew. This process can be repeated as many times as needed to cover the required distance.

Much like the zeppelins of old, the volume of helium needed requires a very large gas bag area. But hypothetically, this design could allow the aircraft to travel practically any distance with no fuel. It would expel no polluting gasses, and it would be virtually silent. It would also have some interesting features for such a large craft, including vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), and the ability to set down on land or at sea. Additionally, its buoyancy would allow it to hover in the air if needed, even in the event of total power loss.

Considering the GravityPlane’s simplicity, its environmentally friendly propulsion, and its freedom from heavy and expensive fossil fuels, this concept could completely revolutionize aircraft design in the coming decades if it proves viable. And using non-flammable helium means that a Hindenburg-style disaster is not a risk. Can Hunt Aviation deliver the sparkling, rigid-airship future that zeppelins promised us so long ago? Time will tell.

Volvo gravity powered car

Volvo has tested a concept that doesn't use gasoline or even have an engine, but it does need to be on an inclined plane though. The Volvo concept uses Sir Isaac Newton's fave force to power it, propelling it up to speeds of 54mph. Though fastest in the Extreme Gravity Competition held in California, which saw other automotive heavyweights such as Audi and Bentley competing, you won't see this concept on the road ever.

Extreme Gravity Car!

Extreme gravity racing is a high-tech, high-speed version of the quintessentially grassroots soapbox derby, a slice of Americana that has fascinated kids for the past seven decades.

Conceptually, not much has changed since the first event was staged in 1934: Build a small, simple race car according to tightly constrained rules, and coast down a racetrack powered by nothing more complicated than gravity. However, a lot has changed in the design of the cars, as evidenced by Volvo's "Aria", the car that won the latest extreme gravity car race!

“We paired a cost-effective fiberglass body with a steel-frame chassis and space-age high performance ceramic components, orchestrated with the latest sophisticated computer modeling and test techniques, yielding a design that reflects and harnesses Volvo’s brand and Scandinavian soul.” ~Blair Taylor, Volvo Designer, and leader of the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) team.

The Extreme Gravity Competition, was founded by Don MacAllister of America Works for Kids. Their way of helping foster kids is to provide as many job opportunities for them as possible during the extreme gravity races. This helps support the foster kids transition from the foster care system to become working, self-sufficient members of the community!

“We were very happy with how the kids were able to contribute to the Monterey race,” said MacAllister. “It would have been very difficult to carry out the race without the hard work of our foster kids. I look forward to their involvement in the upcoming Irvine race.”

Volvo won the grand prize for design in its first attempt (2004) to build a gravity car. It was constructed from lightweight materials such as aluminium, carbon-fibre and fibreglass giving it an "anorexic" weight of just 15 kgs. Every inch of this car was optimised for aerodynamic performance, and to decrease rolling resistance. The rider lies face down inside cramped bodywork with their head just behind the front wheel, steering is controlled by handlebars attached directly to the front axle, and braking is done by a trigger on the left handlebar. This car tops out at around 40 mph.

Note From Technophile: Aerodynamically optimized, engine-less cars (built by engineers and stylists at nine automobile manufacturers) race wheel-to-wheel, while hurtling down intimidating curves, essentially turning extreme gravity racing into a mini "Formula One". As in a traditional soapbox derby competition, gravity still rules, but the materials, fabrication techniques and costs have moved into the 21st century. Computer-aided design and carbon-fiber components are commonplace, and engineers are experimenting with demon tweaks ranging from formula-car suspensions to tires that are integrated into the wheels. Several teams used computational-fluid-dynamics programs to shape the futuristic bodywork. Some even tested their cars in wind tunnels!

The fuelless gravity motor

The Fuelless Gravity Motor is what I invented before I discovered the Fuelless Engine! You will not be able to run a car with it, but you can build one to generate AC or DC electricity for your home. This invention is basically like a windmill generator but does not require wind to make it run. Instead, it uses gravity, inertia and leverage as its main sources of power as well as a small input of electrical power to start and keep the free energy reaction going. ( 1200 vdc pulses x .10 milliamps ). Most free energy devices have to have some kind of input energy to get the chain reaction going. The only free energy device that I have seen running, without a small input of energy, is a permanent magnet motor. A free energy permanent magnet motor needs no outside source of energy, it uses nothing but magnets to run itself. ( See our plans #376 for $19.95 )

I have spent over 7 years developing this gravity motor and everyone who has seen it run for themselves are amazed! The plans are well illustrated. Supplies are easy to find in most hardware stores. This device is very easy to build! The longer the arms are built the more horsepower and torque you will get at the rotor shaft area as well as adding more weight to the end of the arms to increase the torque leverage area. For testing purposes our plans also show you how to test the mechanical structure of the device by using an air compressor and air cylinder to fire at the 6:00 position to keep the arm at an off balance position so the motor flywheel will turn and you can test the motor to make sure all the nuts and bolts are in place and will not fly apart. Then the customer is urged to build our special free energy electromagnetic solenoid to replace the air cylinder and air compressor.

So how does it work?

“The motor turns counter clock wise. The arms are in perfect balance positions at the 6:00 and the 12:00 positions. As it continues to turn past the 12:00 position the leverage arms both move to the left about 10 to 12 inches. This creates an OFF BALANCE and rotates the heavy steel flywheel until the off balanced arm reaches the 6:00 position. At that point a very high efficient / free energy solenoid coil kicks in and pushes the arms back up into a perfect balanced position and they continue to rotate back to the 12:00 position. Then the process starts all over again - this is all done very quickly!”

“Our special high efficiency free energy solenoid coil only comes on for a split second (at 6:00) and quickly goes off. The input coil consumes only small milliamps to keep it running! To watch this thing run as fast as it does with such a powerful torque is truly amazing! The rpm's can be adjusted. Our first prototype was very easy to make, we simply used a bicycle wheel to prove that it worked and then went on to build a bigger prototype.
